Multi-Dimensional Family Therapy (MDFT)
A family-based outpatient treatment program
developed to work with adolescents with drug and
behavioral problems.  This model works with
both the adolescent and the caregiver to
identify problem behaviors and encourage
positive changes and growth in the family.
Based on a developmental understanding of the
youth as an individual, it focuses on issues of self-
identity, sexual experimentation and cognitive
changes and a deep understanding of family
dynamics and relationships within the cultural
context in which they live.
MDFT utilizes Structural Family Therapy and
Strategic Family Therapy and emphasizes problem
solving, principles of change and intervention,
assigning tasks or homework and identifying and
including support networks for the family.

Intensive Community Family Support Services (ICFS)
A community-based outpatient program designed to provide the intensive therapeutic and psychiatric wrap-a-round
supports necessary to return a youth to the community from a therapeutic residence or prevent the youth from
being sent to a residence.  This program works with youth with intensive psychiatric and/or Co-Occurring Disorders,
as well as issues associated with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.  Frequently, relationships must be re-established
between the youth and their family, as well as addressing parental skills.
ICFS utilizes careful and continuous assessment, Systemic and Structural Family Therapies, Cognitive Behavioral
techniques, Harm Reduction and Stages of Change.
All referrals for Children’s Services must come from the Hartford Area DCF Office
